Voters of Tomorrow is a political movement for young people and by young people. With the guiding goal of building youth political power, Voters of Tomorrow has a presence in over 25 states and volunteers in all 50. Backed by extensive research on Gen Z, we’re taking the issues Gen Z cares about most into the rooms where decisions get made. Through extensive advocacy, on-the-ground and online organizing, and a nationwide network of Gen Z organizers and activists, we’re making sure that as the most diverse generation, we are represented and spoken for.

Job Summary

The Legislative Director will report to the Executive Director. This position will lead VOT efforts in shaping and advancing legislative agendas at the federal and state levels, oversee the Policy and Advocacy teams while directing the day-to-day operations of the Legislative team, and develop and execute strategies to effectively advocate for the interests of Gen Z through policy development and advocacy efforts.

This position is part time with the expectation to contribute approximately 20 hours of work per week.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Envision and develop the strategy for the Legislative team to advance the organization's legislative agenda through policy development and advocacy.
  • Create a comprehensive strategy to advance VOT's Gen Z Agenda through both federal and state legislation.
  • Collaborate with other members of the leadership team to ensure alignment of legislative efforts with the organization's overall goals and objectives.
  • Manage a team of Legislative Associates, providing guidance and direction to ensure effective legislative research and the creation of new legislation to advance Gen Z's policy positions.
  • Coordinate with Deputy Legislative Directors to assign and oversee policy and advocacy tasks for Legislative Associates.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative team culture that encourages innovation and professional growth.
  • Coordinate with the Advocacy team to align on legislative priorities, outreach efforts, and advocacy strategies.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration between the Legislative and Advocacy teams to enhance the organization's impact on key policy issues.
  • Stay informed about emerging policy trends and legislative developments relevant to Gen Z's interests.
  • Analyze existing legislation and propose improvements or new legislation to advance the organization's policy objectives.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders, including lawmakers, government officials, coalition partners, and advocacy partners, to advance the organization's legislative agenda effectively.
  • Represent the organization in relevant forums and events, advocating for Gen Z's interests.
  • Track and report on the progress and outcomes of legislative efforts, evaluating the effectiveness of strategies and making adjustments as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the Legislative team's overall effectiveness.

Requirements and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree (or progress toward degree) in Political Science, Public Policy, Law, or related fields is preferred.
  • Proven experience in legislative policy development and advocacy, preferably at the national or state level.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and leading teams, with a focus on empowering and developing staff.
  • Strong understanding of legislative processes and the ability to navigate complex policy landscapes.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex policy issues to diverse audiences.
  • Visionary thinking and the ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives effectively.
  • Passion for advocating on behalf of Gen Z and advancing their interests in the legislative arena.
